Greg Jones has nearly twenty years of experience in the practice of technology and intellectual property law. Before joining TechLaw Ventures he was Vice President of Technology Law at Novell, Inc. In 2008 and 2010 he served as an adjunct faculty member of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, teaching courses on technology licensing.

Mr. Jones has a wealth of experience creating and enforcing corporate policies and strategies, and drafting and negotiating agreements relating to the development, delivery, and support of software and related services. Many of these technology projects involved overseas subsidiaries and third parties in Europe and Asia. He has substantial experience advising clients on legal issues implicated by open source technologies, and formulating intellectual property protection and litigation strategies.

During his time at Novell his client groups included the company's software business units, alliances, consulting, engineering, IS&T, marketing, and support. He was responsible for technology agreements with Novell's joint venture in Japan and also served as a director of international subsidiaries of Novell, including the Indian Development Center in Bangalore.

Mr. Jones has been instrumental in advancing the open source movement in the corporate world, heading Novell's team that, with IBM and Red Hat, created Open Invention Network, an intellectual property company that promotes Linux, and also guided the negotiation of Novell's landmark Patent Cooperation Agreement with Microsoft. He supervised Novell's intellectual property programs, including intellectual property due diligence and contract issues for M&A projects such as Novell's acquisition of SUSE Linux. Charged with addressing and balancing the competition, legal and community concerns presented by Novell's adoption of a mixed-source product strategy, Mr. Jones established and chaired Novell's Open Source Review Board, represented Novell on the vendor committee that negotiated terms of the current version of the GNU General Public License, and guided Novell's creation and administration of its Linux Indemnity Program. Mr. Jones has testified in numerous depositions and as a trial witness in federal court in the landmark SCO v. Novell litigation.

Mr. Jones has negotiated significant agreements with companies such as AMD, Caldera, Canon, Compaq Computer Corporation, EMC, Fufitsu, General Electric, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, MySQL, NEC, Oracle, Philips, Red Hat, Ricoh, SAP, Sony, Sybase, Sun, and Yahoo.
